Vineyards

Our largest vineyard at just over 14 acres  was planted in 1999. It is Pinot Noir, consisting of 9 different blocks; each block has a different combination of clones and rootstock, including clones 113, 114, 115, 667, 777and 828. Vine density is 1361 vines per acre. The vineyard is on a south facing hillside between 500 and 650 feet in elevation. 

Named after the Alfaro's son, the vineyard was planted in 2001. It is comprised of 7 acres broken into different blocks on a very steep hill between 450 and 800 feet in elevation. Grandma & Grampa's blocks are located on the lower part of the hill and are planted to 4 different Dijon clones of Chardonnay, and Pommard clones 4 & 5 Pinot Noir. Billy K block is planted to one acre of Merlot divided between clones 343, 347 and 181. La Escalera is a terraced hillside block planted to Hermitage clones of Syrah. On the top of the hill is Mrs. K's block; half of the block is planted to Syrah clones 470, 877 and 174 and the other half is planted to the heirloom clones Swan, Mt. Eden, Martini and Pommard. The vine density is over 2300 vines per acre and the soil type is sandy loam.

Named for its sandy loam soil, La Playita Vineyard (“little beach” in Spanish) encompasses 3 acres. South facing and sitting at approximately 500’ elevation next to a seasonal stream, the vineyard is at the coolest spot on the Alfaro farm. When planted in 2008, there were only about 10 acres of Gruner Veltliner in all of California; today there are approximately 170 acres planted. 

The vineyard stretches to the summit of the property, at 850 feet in elevation, on a steep terrace with an ocean view. The vineyard is evenly split between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Own rooted vines selected from a Grand Cru Vosne Romanee Monopole vineyard  were planted in the spring of 2008. The Robert Young clone of Chardonnay make up the rest of the plantings. This vineyard is named after vintner/winegrower Richard's wife and best friend with whom he has been partners in crime with for 36 years.

The vineyard is named after the Alfaro's daughter. Planted in 1998, the vineyard covers a little more than 7 acres on a north west facing hillside between 550 and 650 feet elevation. The lower portion of the vineyard is planted with two and a half acres of own rooted Wente clone Chardonnay and one acre of the "Muscat" clone of Chardonnay (CH 809). The upper portion is planted to Pinot Noir. This high density planting (almost 2000 vines per acre) consists of clones 113, 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, 359, 475, Pommard 4 and Pommard 5.

Established in 1980, this 16 acre dry-farmed vineyard is nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the coastal town of Aptos. The site sits at 750 to 800 feet above sea level and has well-draining sandy loam soil. Twelve acres are planted to the Robert Young clone of Chardonnay and four acres are planted to the Mt. Eden, Pommard and Martini clones of Pinot Noir.  Its proximity to the sea (less than 4 miles inland) assures the grapes receive the cooling influence of the Monterey Bay, which is so desirable when crafting this premium wine.
